Choose a table feature by the task it solves: a raised surface for occasional work, a drawer for small items, an open shelf for frequently used objects, or charging beside a seat. This guide compares those functions after the room measurements are settled.

Lift tops: check the moving surface

A lift top changes both the height and the reach of the tabletop. Check the raised dimensions, opening direction, and the manufacturer's load and operating instructions. Mark where the edge travels before placing it beside a sofa. Keep hands and loose objects away from the mechanism while operating it; do not assume every model supports the same working load.

Drawers: compare usable space

External table dimensions do not tell you the drawer capacity. Measure the items you want to store and ask for the internal drawer width, depth, and height if the listing does not provide them. Check the opening direction: a drawer facing the sofa needs room to pull out while someone is seated. A narrow drawer may organize remotes well without accommodating a laptop.

Open shelves: access versus visible clutter

An open shelf is useful when books or baskets are used often. Compare the clear opening and shelf depth with the actual basket, including its handles. Leave a practical route for removing items and cleaning underneath. A photograph with decorative baskets does not establish that the baskets are included.

USB: check the connection, not just the label

Built-in USB can keep a phone close to the seat, but it does not establish fast-charging support. Confirm connector type, output rating, and any power cord requirements in the specific listing. Plan the route to a wall outlet before choosing the table so the cord does not cross a walking path.

Choose one priority first

For a reading corner, easy access to books may matter more than enclosed storage. For a shared living room, a drawer may clear small objects from the top.
