Coffee Table Base Footprint vs Tabletop Overhang
Plan a coffee table at two levels: the outer tabletop and the base beneath it. The top determines the edge you walk around and reach across; legs, rings or panels determine what occupies the space below. A smaller-looking base does not make the full table narrow enough for a tighter walkway.
The coffee and end table buying guide covers overall selection. This comparison focuses on the lower frame, rather than rug placement, surface styling or robot-vacuum clearance.
Compare two different round-table bases

The chrome T270-13 photograph shows glass tops above crossed metal supports and circular lower frames. Its coffee table is listed at 38 W x 38 D x 18.38 H inches. The lower ring appears inset, but the listing does not state its diameter or the amount of top overhang. Perspective is not a reliable ruler.

The light-brown T237-13 set has broad legs near the perimeter of each round top. Its coffee table is listed at 34.13 W x 34.13 D x 16.75 H inches. The photo shows three legs on each table, but does not provide their spacing or the clear width between them. Neither product should be described as having a fully open floor area simply because the top is round.
Keep the listed size separate from missing base measurements
| Specification | T270-13, chrome | T237-13, light brown |
|---|---|---|
| Coffee table, inches W x D x H | 38 x 38 x 18.38 | 34.13 x 34.13 x 16.75 |
| Each end table, inches W x D x H | 26 x 26 x 24.13 | 20.5 x 20.5 x 22 |
| Package | One coffee table + two end tables | One coffee table + two end tables |
| Listed materials | Glass and metal | MDF, laminate and melamine |
| Base footprint / overhang | Not specified | Not specified |
The 3.87-inch difference between the listed coffee-table widths describes the overall tables, not the gap around their legs. It cannot tell you how much room your feet will have. The two end tables also need their own positions; they are not optional extras within these packages.
Mark the complete top before examining the base
Use the full listed width and depth to screen the room. Keep the top clear of upholstery and the route people actually use. Then request the base dimensions if you need a close fit beneath the edge. Check at floor level and at the height of any crossing supports.
Do not substitute the ring diameter for the 38-inch top when calculating a walking gap. Likewise, a leg may be close to the edge even when the space between other legs looks generous. Turning a three-leg table changes where its openings face without changing the round top diameter.
Check access without assuming extra functions
Consider your feet when seated and standing, and how you will clean around the supports. Do not place a foot on a lower ring or assume it is a rated footrest. Crossed metal supports do not establish that a table folds, and a glass top does not establish that it is removable or tempered. Confirm those features only from the exact product instructions.
For a useful supplier question, request the outside base width, the clear opening at the approach side, and a side view showing the top relative to the supports. If the answer is unavailable, do not rely on that space for a tightly planned room.
Continue with the overall size worksheet and set versus separate-table comparison. These examples use store specifications and photographs, not a physical fit or load test.
