Coffee Table Between Two Facing Sofas: Measure Both Sides
For two facing sofas, choose the coffee table from the space between both seat fronts, not from one sofa's length alone. The table must leave usable room on each side and an exit around its ends. A centered table can still be awkward if the sofas have different depths, seat heights or recliner movements.
Our coffee and end table buying guide covers the wider choice of shape and set type. This guide focuses on the shared table in an opposing-sofa arrangement.
Measure the gap across the seating group
Place the sofas where they can remain without blocking doors or the route around the group. Measure between the front edges of the cushions facing one another, then check projecting feet or frames too. Call that clear distance G. If the planned gaps to the table are A and B, the maximum table depth in that direction is G minus A minus B.
Hypothetical calculation, not a clearance standard: a 60-inch gap with a tested 18-inch allowance on each side leaves 60 - 18 - 18 = 24 inches for the table. The 18-inch allowances are assumptions to test with your household, not a guarantee of comfort or accessibility. Unequal allowances may work better when the seats differ.

Use product dimensions in the correct direction
The pictured GTUS-3348 is one rectangular coffee table, listed at 48 by 24 by 20 inches high. With its long side parallel to the sofas, its 24-inch depth is the dimension that enters the example above. Turning it ninety degrees would put its 48-inch dimension across that same gap, changing the calculation completely.
| Item | Coffee table dimensions | What is included |
| GTUS-3348 | 48 x 24 x 20 inches high | One coffee table; two drawers and open shelves |
| T255-13 | 48 W x 23.75 D x 19.25 H inches | One coffee table plus two end tables |
Listed dimensions describe the furniture, not the space required to use it. Compare table height with both actual seats and try the reach from each side. Do not assume matching overall sofa heights mean matching seat heights.
Plan the table ends as separate access points
Next outline the table's length. Walk from each sofa around both ends to leave the group. A 48-inch table may leave sufficient depth on both sides yet interfere with a door or chair at an end. Keep the main room route outside the seated knee space where the room allows; do not count that occupied space twice as a walkway.
For the broader route check, use the living room traffic-flow guide. The coffee table measurement guide provides the general sizing process.

Give matching end tables their own positions
T255-13 includes two end tables, each listed at 24 inches wide, 22.38 inches deep and 24.25 inches high. Do not add them to the plan only after fitting the center table. Outline each beside a sofa, check reach over the arm and keep it out of the exit around the coffee table. You do not have to place one at each end of the center table just because the pieces were photographed together.
Check storage from the side that will use it
The GTUS-3348 has two drawers on the pictured front. Decide which sofa should face that side, then allow for drawer opening and the person accessing it. Drawer travel and internal dimensions are not provided here; do not infer them from the closed table's 24-inch depth. Shelves also need an approach for taking items out.
Finish by sitting on both sofas, reaching toward the outline and standing up while someone uses the opposite seat. Test recliners through their full intended movement separately. If one side cannot use the table comfortably, reposition the group or consider separate side surfaces rather than forcing symmetry.
