End Tables Near Windows: Leave Room for Curtains and Opening

Place a window-side end table only after checking the window and curtains in both their open and closed positions. A table can fit between a sofa and wall yet prevent curtains from gathering, obstruct a handle or leave the tabletop awkward to reach. Use the moving parts of the room to define the available space.

For overall selection, start with our coffee and end table buying guide. This checklist addresses the window boundary rather than replacing the general sofa-height or table-size guides.

Map the window before marking the table

Record sill height, the position of handles, the space used by any inward-opening panel and where curtains gather when fully open. Check the fabric at tabletop height and near the floor; it may not hang in a straight vertical line. Include protruding baseboards when measuring the usable gap.

Keep required window access and any designated exit unobstructed. Furniture should not prevent normal operation or access for cleaning. Follow applicable building requirements and the window manufacturer's instructions rather than treating a decorating example as a safety clearance.

Compare footprint and height separately

The round antique-gold T399-6 is listed at approximately 20 W x 20 D x 22.63 H inches. The white/brown T459-3 is approximately 24 W x 26 D x 25 H inches and has two cabinet doors. Each listing includes one table. These are different footprints and access needs, not interchangeable styles in the same size.

A round edge avoids a projecting tabletop corner, but does not prove there is enough curtain clearance. A rectangular cabinet needs room for its doors as well as its closed body. Check the actual base and tabletop outlines rather than assuming the narrowest visible part sets the footprint.

Use a window-side trial layout

  1. Mark the table's full outline beside the sofa.
  2. Open and close the curtains and window without dragging fabric across the marked table position.
  3. Allow room to reach the window controls without leaning over the proposed table.
  4. Check seated access to the tabletop, then add the lamp or other intended objects to the plan.
  5. For a cabinet, repeat the test with the doors open and a person accessing the storage.

Hypothetical example: a 28-inch gap with 5 inches reserved for the curtain stack leaves 23 inches before any additional separation is allowed. A 24-inch-wide table already exceeds that remainder. A 20-inch table is only a candidate for further testing, not an automatic fit. These gap measurements are invented for the calculation, not product specifications.

Check what sits on top

A lamp shade can project past the table and into the curtain path even when its base fits. Measure the shade and retain an accessible route for its switch and cord. Do not place cords across the walkway or trap them in the window. Consult product care instructions for exposure to sunlight and moisture; a window setting in a photo is not a weather-resistance claim.

See the end table height guide and side table and lamp sizing guide for the adjacent decisions. If moving the table clear of the window makes it difficult to reach, choose a smaller piece or another location rather than forcing the gap.
