Replacing One Bar Stool: Match Model, Height and Finish

To replace one bar stool, match the model and seat height first, then compare the finish, upholstery and package quantity. A similar photograph does not establish an exact match. If the original model is unavailable, treat the replacement as a coordinated alternative rather than promising that it will look identical.

Find the original model before shopping

Check your order record and any accessible manufacturer label without taking the stool apart. Record the model, color option and whether the original purchase contained one stool or a pair. Photograph the complete stool, back, seat and footrest to support identification. Do not use a retailer's broad style name as the sole identifier.

D542-124 is sold individually, with a listed 24.25-inch seat height.

Separate a height match from a visual match

The light brown D542-124 lists a 24.25-inch seat and overall dimensions of 19.25 by 19.25 by 36.88 inches. The gray D388-230 lists a 30.5-inch seat and overall dimensions of 19.25 by 20.38 by 43.38 inches. Their listed widths happen to match, but their seats differ by 6.25 inches. That makes them unsuitable as height-matched replacements for one another at the same surface.

Compare the actual sitting surface, not the top of the back. Ask for clarification when a listing provides only overall height. Also check the usable seat depth and footrest position; a matching seat height alone does not establish the same sitting experience.

Check the finish without expecting an exact color match

Screen settings, room lighting and wear can affect how an old stool compares with a new one. A shared word such as brown or gray does not identify an identical finish. Ask whether the replacement is the same manufacturer model and finish code. If not, choose a deliberate contrast only after checking the dimensions.

Order the right number of units

Both pictured listings specify one stool. For an individually sold stool, ordering quantity one means one stool. For a listing explicitly sold as a pair, quantity one means one pair. Check the selected option and cart line before checkout, especially when product photography shows multiple seats around an island.

Do a final compatibility check

  • Model and selected finish match the intended item.
  • Seat height works at the existing surface.
  • Back and swivel movement clear the surrounding furniture.
  • The package supplies the number of stools you actually need.
  • Missing dimensions are resolved before ordering.

This comparison uses published GTU specifications, not a physical fit test. Do not repair a damaged stool by swapping parts from a similar-looking model unless its manufacturer approves that repair.
